WAMM & the COALITION FOR A NUCLEAR FREE MISSISSIPPI RIVER SAYS:
DEFEND OUR RIVER! WATER IS LIFE!
We oppose the continued operation and radioactive pollution of the Monticello Nuclear Generating Reactor. Recent radioactive leaks at the reactor on the Mississippi River, 35 miles NW of Minneapolis, pose serious threats to public health, the Mississippi, and drinking water for millions
CONTEXT:
In 2022 the power plant leaked 829,000 gallons of wastewater containing radioactive tritium that reached the Mississippi River. Tritium (even small amounts) is proven to be linked to cancers in newborns, loss of pregnancy, and birth abnormalities.
Xcel Energy waited 4 months before alerting the public of the leak. Xcel then grossly underestimated the extent of the leaks and then lied about it reaching the Mississippi. The radioactive leaks prove that the 1970s infrastructure is not equipped to withstand aging, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is not enforcing oversight measures.
Xcel cannot be trusted to accurately report potential harm to the public, and the world is facing a devastating climate crisis.
It is the responsibility of the State of Minnesota and Xcel Energy to invest ratepayer funds in clean energy, rather than in dangerous and outdated generation. Closing Monticello now is also in line with Minnesota's decades-long moratorium on new nuclear power plants reflecting a commitment to safe and sustainable energy sources.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the MN Public Utilities Commission both approved a license extension to 2050.
We demand that the Public Utilities Commission shut down this dangerous nuclear reactor! We say NO to deadly radioactivity harming our children, environment, drinking water, and food.
DON'T NUKE OUR RIVER!
