EDeX - Adjunct Faculty and the Exile of Higher Education

  • Hamline Midway Library 1558 West Minnehaha Avenue Saint Paul, Minnesota 55104 (map)

The adjunct faculty at private colleges in the Twin Cities saw their first successful union Drive with Hamline University, and have subsequently added Augsburg and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Hamline’s initial contract expired in the fall of 2018, and so far 20 (often grueling!) negotiating sessions have failed to get even minimal progress for the adjunct teaching staff there.

Our community needs to share what we have learned from the initial organizing drives, including drives that nearly succeeded but were stifled at the very last, and share what is happening in the first re-negotiated contract. Management has been able to find the resources to pay administrators, but refuse to show even minimal progress for the adjunct staff. We need to link arms with our fellow teachers in the full-time staff, other adjunct campuses, and allies in classroom education to move toward a more just, more fair, set of working conditions for the benefit of our members and the students we teach.

The panel will include:

Catherine Guisan - Chair, American Political Science Association Committee on the Status of Contingent Faculty and Visiting Associate Professor, University of Minnesota
Mary Pogatshnik - Executive Council, AAUP-Minnesota Conference and Instructional Faculty, University of Minnesota
Peter Rachleff - Labor historian and Co-Executive Director, East Side Freedom Library
David Weiss - Steward, Hamline Adjunct Faculty Union and Adjunct Instructor
A representative of the Inter Faculty Organization, Minnesota State University System

Join us! We need your support in learning more, and contacting first Hamline University and eventually others in this movement.
