kyong juhn: Walk for Hope and Peace

  • Rochester Art Center 40 Civic Center Drive Southeast Rochester, MN, 55904 United States (map)

Walk for Hope & Peace presents kyong juhn’s journey from her current hometown, Rochester, to Bemidji, Minnesota, having walked over 350 miles for 21 days. With overwhelming support from Veterans For Peace, Chapter 27 and many wonderful, warm-hearted families who hosted the artist every night, juhn walked 15-20 miles every day and photographed her journey in order to bring awareness to the imminent political tension surrounding her walk.

This project functions as homage to juhn’s mother, who escaped from the North Korean communist regime by walking 323 miles from Pyongyang, North Korea to Busan, South Korea. As a descendent of a North Korean refugee couple, born in South Korea, and now living in America, juhn sought to include diverse Minnesotan communities in her walk, hoping to engage in dialogue about ways to promote peace between her beloved countries: the United States of America, South Korea, and North Korea. juhn walked and photographed this project to empower and inspire participants from diverse communities so as to envision art as a tool, extending others imaginations and voices.  During the course of walking, these communities experience the unfolding of their own political voice. It is these voices are at the heart of the RAC exhibition.

“Every day, I walked each step to renew hope for the peace of our future, to touch each facet of my transformation, and to feel the warm terrain of Minnesota, where the place is now I can call as my home.”
