Trans Day of Remembrance Kabbalat Shabbat

  • Shir Tikvah Congregation 1360 West Minnehaha Parkway Minneapolis, MN, 55419 (map)

On Friday night November 16th a community of trans Shir Tikvah and JPride leaders will hold a musical service to honor the the loss of the 22 trans people murdered over the course of 2018. We’ll honor the trans voices that are here with us, and mourn for the voices lost to violence. All of the names of our siblings killed over the course of the year will be read, kaddish will be said, and leaders will share reflections and kavanot to lead us into prayer.

Following the service we’ll host a light vegetarian potluck downstairs. There will be time for people to share stories, hold one another in grief, and celebrate the lives of trans folks in our communities that are here with us. Please RSVP to join us for dinner here: https://goo.gl/forms/HuRIAWNIrpPCXf1y1

Shabbat is a time set aside, unlike the other six days of the week. We gather in close community and pour ourselves into a moment of rest and reflection, into a time of prayer and nourishment. It’s also traditional to set aside time in our holiest of days to mourn. We say mourners kaddish, observe the yartzeit of lost loved ones, and hold space for those carrying fresh pain and loss. Shir Tikvah and J-Pride are partnering this year to honor and help hold the deep well of grief that surrounds the consistent and brutal loss of trans lives, particularly the murders of trans women of color, throughout this nation and world. We’ll dedicate the 25 hours of our Shabbat practices to those lost, and offer our rest in dedication to those who should have been allowed to continue living, thriving, and finding their own moments of rest.
