Women Against Military Madness is turning 35 years old this year! Usually people are not so excited to celebrate getting older but in this case we are THRILLED! WAMM is only here because of you!
WAMM has been a pillar of peace and justice throughout our community. As we come to celebrate our successes, we remember where we started. In 1982, a group of like-minded women gathered to discuss the impending threat of nuclear warfare. These women decided to do something about it. On that cold January day, they said, “Never a meeting without an action.” In that moment, the first WAMM action occurred, a protest against nuclear weapons. Today, we continue with vigor and passion to make peace and justice a national priority.
Now, more than ever, there is a need to keep the pressure on to ban nuclear weapons, to bring an end to additional spending for war, and to ensure that the culture of militarism is stopped in its tracks. WAMM wants to continue to empower women to make change in our community and beyond, as we have done for so many years.
Our theme is “WAMM 35 years, Then and Now!” This will be a celebration of our community and organization at Surly Brewing Company on Monday, July 31st starting at 6:00pm. We will have raffle prizes, peace and justice trivia and light hors d’oeuvres. If you are craving more food, you will be able to order from the Surly Brewery Bar menu and their wonderfully well-crafted beers will be available at the cash bar. All ages are welcome to join us!
