The committee began in 1998 with a focus on ending the economic sanctions on Iraq which were responsible for the death of 3,500 – 5,000 Iraqi children a month. Following 9/11, the committee also spoke out against the U.S. wars and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, and more recently against the U.S. bombings of Libya, Syria, Somalia, Pakistan and Yemen. It has called attention to other covert wars that the U.S. is waging in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, and continues to work against U.S. involvement in the production, sale and use of the weapons of war.
The committee has organized many peace events since its founding, including demonstrations, fasts, educational events, and visits to the offices of our congressional leaders. Members of the committee have worked with various peace and justice coalitions, organized 13 annual Candlelight Services for the Child Victims of War and sponsored several speaking tours for peace activists Sami Rasouli and Kathy Kelly.
The committee has highlighted the connections between the U.S. war machine and climate change and are currently spearheading the WAMM Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, the only weapons of mass destruction which have not been banned by the international community.
The WAMM End War Committee, together with the Twin Cities Peace Campaign, has maintained the peace vigil on the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge since April, 1999.

Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) denounces in the strongest possible terms the illegal and deadly bombing of Syria on the border with Iraq on February 25, 2021. The airstrike, which was conducted inside a sovereign nation and without Congressional approval, took place only 37 days into the Biden administration. The outrageous attack saw 35,000 pounds of bombs dropped and as many as 22 people have been reported killed.
